Common Running Injuries

Running injuries typically affect the body from the mid back and down. Hips, knees, ankle and foot pain make up most of what we see, but we do find more subtle issues or a combination of typical injuries.

Muscles strains & Ligament sprains

Running is notorius for doing the same movements over and over again, which can cause enough repetative loading of tissues to shift the balance of repair to injury. Muscles bear the brunt of most of these strains.

Ligaments are always at risk for running activities, especially if the running surface is trail or cross-country based. A simple rolled ankel can lead to 3-9 months of recovery.

Tendinopathy - Tendon issues

Clinical space for hire

Tendonitis or tendinopathy as we call it in clinic is probable the most common issue we see. We explain this injury as a ‘Capacity’ issue where the strength of a tendon tested by a repetitive force leads to a lack of recovery time.

The issue tends to creep up on you and before you know it’s happened you are sturggling to run and unabel to compete.

Stress fractures - Stress response

Stress fractures can send any runner into a fit of panic if this issue appears. There is simply no fix apart from resting in the dreaded boot!

Lucikly we understand that not all bony injuries in running involve a stress fracture. There are more subtle levels of bony injuries meaning our treatment plans explore how people can recover and keep active.

Cartilage & Meniscus issues

Cartilage issues tend to leave a sour taste in our mouths. Meniscus issues can lead to surgery for some and that’s enough to think your running days are over.

This isn’t the case and most people can make a full recovery regardless of whether a tear heals or not. Allowing the body to repair naturally is important to any recovery plan.

What does our Running Clinic do differently?

We are runners and therefore we know what runners do, how they train and what they want to achieve. Though years of experience of working with people starting off with couch to 5k, right up to multiday ultra-marathons, we can quickly find the issue and give a simple but effective solution.

Injury Assessment

As running is a specific skill and pattern of movement our team is trained to explore your training patterns and match any issues to your pain. We can test the strength and mobility of running specific areas of the body that allow you to have good form and function.

Movement patterns

Being able to screen for deficits in a runners gait is key to understanding why the body may be becoming injured. Our team knows that running isn’t all about symmetry and perfect form; it’s about knowing what works for you and your goals.

Injury Rehabilitation

Our therapists provide video guided exercise programmes for any strengthening and moblity plan to lead your recovery. We want to make sure you understand what needs to be done in a manner that fits your life and working demands. Running is demanding enough let along trying to add 4-5 hours of rehab a week into a busy week.

Injury Prevention

A phrase that get throw around by so many, actual injury prevention isn’t about, saunas, foam rolling and stretching before or after exercise. Using evidence based recovery plans, proper conditioning and advice on over training, our team can give you modern and effective advice to stay out of our clinic.
