What is a deep tissue massage?

There are many different type of massage available to us; sometime it can be hard to work out which one is for you.

A deep tisue massage is very similar to a Sports massage with the techniques use both being drawn from a traditional Swedish massage. One of the key differences is the purpose of the people who use it.

For example, Sports Massage is deployed in sporting environments where faster or more rapid techniques are used in a pre-match setting. A deep tissue massage wouldn’t offer the same benefits.

What are the benefits of a regular massage?

There are a number of reasons to get a deep tissue massage and they can be different for each person, here are some:

1) You need time to time to yourself to relax and unwind

Having time to yourself is a rarity nower days with demands of work and life stacking up. During this time you get to relax and enjoy time to focus on you and your health.

2) It can help you relax

Relaxation is a key part of recovery. When the body relaxs it stimualtes the parasympathetic nervous systems. This is key for allowing the body restore and recuperate the vital systems that keep you going.

3) Pain relief

At times we can have an ache that persists, but it’s enough to warrent a visit to the Osteopath. The depth of this massage type can trigger the body’s endorphine systems, which allow temporary or longer term relief.

Osteopathy or Deep tissue massage?

How to choose which service is right for you in our clinic depends on a few things. A deep tissue massage is ideal when you don’t have an injury with or without other symptoms e.g. nerve pain, spasms, swollen tissue or joints.

With these symptoms it’s best to see our Osteopaths as they can assess, diagnose & create the right tretment plan for your recovery.

If you have tight muscles from a busy week at work or in the gym/training then either a Sports Massage or a Deep Tissue Massage can help loosen up and encourage recovery of your body.

Whats the difference between Sports & Deep tissue massage?

To the untrained eye the type of massage are very similar. Our therapists will talk to you about your aims and lifestyle to help work out the treatment you need.

There are a few differences to notice, firstly the vigour of some of the technique in sports massage. They tend to be faster and helping people prepare for activity. Deep tissue is mainly used after activity.

Also, Sports Massage does include friction-like techniques. These are aimed to purposely irritate tissue to help ‘restart’ the healing process for some injuries. Friction techniques can be very sore are only used in specific situations.
