What causes low back pain?

The reasons for back pain are well documented, whether you have a disc irritation, a swollen joint or a muscles spasm, your body can make a full recovery. The low back is placed under a large demand on a daily basis, which requires a strong, mobile and resiliant group of tissues. Part of the reason why people develop low back pain is they can be lacking in any of these areas.

Causes of back pain

The lower back is a complex area consisting of bones, discs, joints, nerves, mucsles, tendons & ligaments. Pain and injury can be appear for seemingly for no reason, or from a direct issue.

  • Disc bulge or herniation
  • Facet joint pain
  • Nerve compression or irritation
  • Muscle spasm
  • Ligament sprain
  • Arthritic changes

The back, like any area of the body repairs on a regular basis. With time parts of the body change and adapt to what we do regularly. These changes can lead to the structure of our bones, joint and other tissus altering, sometimes for the better sometimes not.

Other consideration like your own genetic make up can mean some people are more and less susceptible to pain and injury.

How long does it last?

The duration of back pain is specific to the reason for the pain in the first place. For example, a joint irritation can last 1-2 weeks, where a disc issue can last up to a year. However, there are many interventions we can use to shorten the recovery time for each type of pain.

Back pain can be complicated in it’s presentation because the cause of back pain can come from a number of different tissue at the same time. A muscle spasm can be present due to any of the caused listed above.
